汉语中，用风和日丽，凉风习习来形容"风"；英语中，因强度、破坏力等方面的差异，"风"也有多种表达，且每种表达的意思都略有不同。现列举如下：
1．wind 风（泛指，普通用语）。例如：
A gust of wind blew my hat off．一阵风把我的帽子刮掉了。
The day was very still，without a breath of wind．天空十分平静，一点儿风也没有。
2．breeze 微风（使人感到舒适，凉爽）。例如：
They enjoy the mild breeze of summer．他们享受夏季的和风。
The banner fluttered in the breeze．旗帜在微风中飘扬。
3．gale 大风（风速大，风力强，具有一定的破坏力）。例如：
It’s blowing a gale outside．外面刮着大风。
The ship lost its masts in the gale．这船的桅杆被强风吹断了。
4．storm 暴风雨。例如：
A storm is coming．暴风雨要来了。
You must on no account go out in this storm．你绝不可在这样的暴风雨中出去。
5．hurricane 飓风。例如：
The ship was sunk in a hurricane．船在飓风中沉没了。
The hurricane blew with such force that trees were uprooted．飓风刮得太猛，把树连根拔起。
6．typhoon 台风。例如：
The typhoon hit the south China mainland．台风袭击了华南大陆。
The shipyard was struck by a typhoon．造船厂受到台风的袭击。
7．whirlwind 龙卷风（也可指直径小，很猛烈的旋风）。例如：
Our house was destroyed by a whirlwind．我们的房子被龙卷风毁坏了。
The room was so untidy that it looks as though a whirl wind has been through it．这个房间
