一、ever这个副词主要的一个意思是 "at any time"，即 "在任何一个时间”，表示的是一个时间点。它不同于always。后者表示“at all times”或“all the time”，是一个表示连续意义的频率副词。正因为如此，有的语法学家把I will ever remember you 看作是典型的错句，指出应将其改作I will always remember you.
二、ever在表示“at any time”时，往往用于疑问、否定及条件句中。它既可用来表示任何时候的习惯动作，谓语动词用一般现在时，又可表示过去的任何一个时间，即“at any time in the past”，谓语动词用过去式；既可表示迄今为止的任何一个时间，即"at any time up to now" ，谓语动词用现在完成时，又可以表示将来的任何一个时间，即 "at any time in the future" ，谓语动词用将来时。至于ever的翻译则要灵活掌握，有时不必译出。请看以下各例：

2．Many years later，I was going to Europe on one of the finest ships that ever ploughed the waters of the Atlantic．
