not the first Internet search engine. But people found it easy to use. Today, Google performs two-hundred-million searches everyday. It can search more than four-thousand-million web pages at one time. Yet each search takes less than one second. Google has even become an action word: to "google" means to search for information on the Internet. 

　　The search service that Google offers is free. But Google also provides links to Web pages of companies that sell goods and services. Companies pay Google every time someone uses it to connect with their web page. The amount a company pays depends on its size. 

　　Google’s business has grown very quickly. The company made almost one-thousand-million dollars in two-thousand-three. Its profit was more than one-hundred-million dollars.

　　easy 指"不需付出多大力气就可以完成的", 如: easy work 轻易的工作。

　　simple指"因不复杂而容易的", 即"简单的", 如: Such a dress is simple to make. 这种衣服做起来很简单。

　　act 强调动作的结果, 指单一的和个人的动作, 适用于个 人力 量可以完成的事, 一般属暂时性的, 如:

　　It is an act of kindness to help a blind man across the street. 帮助盲人过街是慈善的行为。

　　action 强调动作的方式和历程, 而且指比较复杂的动作, 需要较长时间才能完成的事, 如:

　　While a ship is in distress, rescuing passengers from danger is a heroic action.

　　当船遇险时, 营救乘客脱离危险是一种英勇的行为。

　　还应注意在机械和物理用语中, 不能用 act, 要用action, 如:the action of heat 热的作用;

　　反之, 在an act of kindness 一语中, 若改为 an action of kindness也是错误的。deed 

　　deed 指较为庄重的、显著的、伟大的和感人的行为, 而且含有永久性, 如同 act, 强调行为的结果和单一性如:

　　He is a good leader in deed as well as in name. 他是一位名副其实的好领袖。



　　5. information knowledge learning erudition 都含“知识”的意思。

　　information 指“从他人的话语、书本或观察中获得的知识”, 如: His information is inaccurate. 他的消息不准确。

　　knowledge 指“通过书本、讲授或由经验及观察中得来的事实和一般原则等”, 如: 

　　acquire a knowledge of English 学到英语知识

　　learning 指“精心攻读和钻研所获得的较渊博而高深的知识”, 如a man of great learning 学识丰富的人。

　　erudition 指“为大多数人所不知道的较深奥的知识”, 即“博学”, 如:

　　The professor’s erudition came from long years of study.这位教授的学问来自长年累月的钻研。


　　6. Offer proffer tender 都含“把某物献给某人”的意思。

　　offer 系常用词, 指“给某人某物”, 对方可以接受, 也可以不接受, 如:
