Schwarzenegger Files Papers for Candidacy 
Filing Deadline for California Recall Candidates Looms

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Election offices opened around the state Saturday for candidates facing an evening filing deadline in the campaign to succeed Gov. Gray Davis if voters decide to recall him on Oct. 7.
A grinning Arnold Schwarzenegger arrived with his wife, Maria Shriver, to the shrieks of onlookers at the Los Angeles County recorder’s office in Norwalk.
The Republican actor signed autographs as he made his way inside and also greeted Arianna Huffington, a columnist and talk show commentator who arrived at the same time to file as an independent candidate.
In Orange County, former baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth, who organized the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, filed his candidacy papers shortly afterward.
"I promise you that I will be the people’s governor," Schwarzenegger told the crowd.
Shriver, a niece of Democratic Sen. Edward Kennedy, praised her husband for "his courage to enter this race." There were rumors before he announced his candidacy that she did not want him to run. "I think he will represent Democrats, independents and Republicans," she said.
Ueberroth, a moderate, has also said he could bridge the gap between Democrats and Republicans. He has pledged to serve only the remainder of Davis’ term, which is up in January 2007.
"Between now and Oct. 7, California voters will be subjected to the same bitter partisanship that too often interferes with getting California to work again," Ueberroth, 65, said. "Once the campaign has ended, I believe that I will be the best qualified person to get the tough job done."
Huffington, in a few remarks before walking inside to file her papers, called for more fuel efficient vehicles and noted that Schwarzenegger had arrived in a sport utility vehicle while she arrived in a hybrid vehicle. Her comments were met by a few boos and cries of "Arnold, Arnold."
