26¡¢µÚ¶þƪ Whales Whales are the largest animals in the world. They live in the ocean, but t hey are not fish. They are warmª²blooded mammals and must have air to breathe. T he babies are born alive and drink milk from the mother¡¯s body. It took millions of years for the whale to develop as it is today. Every spring groups of whales swim hundreds of kilometres to warm places t o bear their young. The mothers take very good care of their babies. The adults are very gentle and playful with each other and with humans. They !talk" to eac h other in a high voice that sounds like singing. This !talking" can be heard for more than 300 kilometers in open waters. Yet humans kill over a hundred whales a day. They kill them to make perfum e, soap, shampoo, and industrial oils. Killing them is a modern business with fa ctory ships and helicopters. The whale dies very slowly in great pain. Some ship s kill every whale they can find, even the mothers and babies. Then there are no young whales to grow up and bear more young. For several years, millions of people all over the world have been working together to save the whale. In 1979 the countries that hunt whales made two imp ortant agreements. The Indian Ocean was to be a safe place for the whales with n o hunting allowed. Factory ships could hunt only in the Antarctic Ocean. At an I nternational conference, the United Nations decided to stop all killing of whale s. But a lot of countries, such as Chile, Denmark, Japan, Norway, Russia, Spain, still hunt them. Of these countries, Japan and Russia kill more than 70 percent of all the whales that are killed. It is not necessary to kill whales. There are other products to use instea d of oil and meat. If the killing continues, this wonderful animal, which took m illions of years to develop, will be gone. In only a few years there will be no more whales in the world.When do groups of whales swim hundreds of kilometers to warm places to bear their young?
