事已成定局,无法挽回。
No one can draw an exact line between wit and humor for sure, but even an
ignorant person may express an opinion in this matter.
Most people believe that humor is the more comfortable and liable quality,
for humorous persons, if their talent is genuine and not a mere shine on the su
rface, are always agreeable companions. A man with a sense of humor radiates a g
eneral pleasure.
People admire wit, but may not always like it, for it can be employed both
for favorable and unfavorable purposes, whereas humor is always mild and helpfu
l; it never points an impertinent finger into one’s defects. A person of wit, ho
wever, may be acidtongued or sarcastic.
Wit has a better voice in a solo, but humor comes into the chorus best. Wi
t keeps the season’s fashions, and is precise in the phrases and judgments of th
e day, but humor is concerned with homely eternal things.
【模拟训练参考作文37】Is Intelligence Born or Developed[C
S]
Are some people born clever, and others stupid? Or is intelligence developed by
our environment or our experiences? Strangely enough, for my part, the answer to
both questions is yes.
[WT6H2X]
The maintaining of one vice costs more than ten virtues.
保持一桩坏事的代价超过保持十件好事的代价。
If we take two people at random from the crowd, it is likely that their degrees
of intelligence will be completely different. If, on the other hand, we take two
identical twins, they will probably share almost the same intelligence. It is e
asy to show that intelligence is to some extent something we are born with. The
closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to
be in intelligence.
Suppose if we put two identical twins in different environments. For example, we
might send one to a university where he can receive a good education and the ot
her to a factory where the work is boring, we would soon find differences in the
ir intelligence development, and this indicates that environment as well as birt
h plays a part.
In sum, our intelligence is given at birth, but it’s also affected by the enviro
nment.
