The “Greenhouse Effect” refers to the warming of the earth due to the increasi
ng
amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is a gas produced ev
ery time a fuel such as coal, oil or natural gas is burned. This carbon dioxide
increases the heat of the atmosphere, and thus warms the planet.

According to scientists, the “Greenhouse Effect” is the most serious problem
our
planet has ever faced. First of all, the level of the ocean could rise, because
ocean water expands as it grows warmer. Melting polar icecaps could also contri
bute to an increase in the level of the ocean. People living on coastlines might
lose their homes, and cities like New Orleans might be completely submerged.

Parts of the world that are already hot might become unbearably hotter. Hot weat
her means a huge increase in the use of air conditioning, which uses energy, cos
ts money and creates pollution. It can make some people, especially elderly peop
le and infants very ill.
Some parts of the world might become much drier. Already many parts of Africa ha
ve suffered frequently from severe droughts. Other parts of the world might beco
me wetter. Too much rain in some regions could kill crops traditionally grown th
ere, and lead to hunger.
Many scientists suggest that people need to learn to conserve fuel, since burnin
g fuel is one of the main causes of the “Greenhouse Effect”. Government should
p
rotect forests, since trees can help reduce the “Greenhouse Effect”. Chemicals
,
which increase the effect can be banned or strictly controlled. Nations should w
ork together to prevent a global disaster, while at the same time ordinary citiz
ens must do their part.

Some people think that the urgent task in our country is to develop economy on a
large scale. Many people, especially in rural areas, are living in poverty. Man
y children cannot afford to receive the compulsory education. They believe that
the only way to get rid of poverty is to develop economy, which is bound to brin

On the other hand, many people insist that environmental protection should be a
top priority. Land resources are dwindling because of water loss and soil erosio
n, waste gases poison the air we are breathing, and rivers, lakes, and even seas
are polluted by waste dumped in them from factories and cities. Evidently, the
deterioration of the quality of the environment threatens the existence of manki
nd. What has brought the pollution is the rapid and advanced development of econ
omy.

In my opinion, both economic development and environmental protection are our ur
gent tasks now. Without economic development, we would remain backward, and we m
ight be conquered and bullied by other countries. Without environmental protecti
on, we would lose our home. Therefore, the best solution is that we should devot
e to the protection of our home while we are developing our economy. There is pl
enty of evidence to show that sustainable development can be achieved by balanci
ng economic growth with protection of the environment. Many findings in scientif
