Where to Live—in the City or in the Country
Many people maintain that living in big cities is superior to living in the coun
try. Living in big cities has many advantages. First, there are more chances of
employment. There is a greater range of jobs and the pay is usually higher. That
is why many people flock to big cities from rural areas in order to make money.
Living standards are higher. Second, there are many schools and universities, w
hich enables people to have more opportunities of receiving better education. Th
ird, people have more chances to achieve success in their career due to favorabl
e working conditions. Furthermore public facilities such as theaters, concerts,
movies, entertaining places and so on can help people fully enjoy themselves in
their spare time. Besides, medical service is convenient.
A wilful fault has no excuse and deserves no pardon.

Country life, however, has attractions of its own. People are close to nature. T
hey can enjoy a quiet and gentle peace of life, which is extremely favorable for
their health. Working in fields is much better than doing physical exercise. In
addition, most villagers are familiar with each other.
As everything has two sides, both big cities and rural areas have their disadvan
tages. Citydwellers suffer from air and noise pollution, crowded buses, traffi
c
jams, or poor housing conditions. Country dwellers may have difficulty in doing
shopping, sending their children to good schools, and getting medical help. As
far as I am concerned, I prefer to live in the country where I can breathe fresh
air and enjoy the idyllic landscapes, far away from the noises in big cities.

Active Classes or Passive Classes
It is obvious that the differences between passive classes and active classes ar
e enormous though classes often seem outwardly alike.
The passive kind of class, or duckstuffing method, usually has a teacher who l
e
ctures, puts outlines and terms on the chalkboard and dispenses information to t
he students. For instance, my philosophy teacher, Miss. Hong, rarely looked up f
rom her notebook in which she had carefully written all her lectures. Teacher
s i
n a passive classroom simply dictate information and answers. They pour facts in
to the students like pouring water into a sieve. The students are usually forced
to sit, listen, take notes, and do only what the teacher has required.
The other kind of class, the active kind, usually has a teacher who stimulates t
he students to learn for themselves by asking questions, by posing problems, and
most of all by being a student, too. Such a teacher might plan the outline of a
course, but doesn’t force the class in only one direction. Students in active c
lasses become more involved in their learning; they ask questions about why and
read books to search for some answers themselves, then discuss what they have fo
und in class.
I prefer active classes because learning becomes fun. Although students may not
much care about facts in classes, their attitudes toward learning and their exci
