The Positive and Negative Effects of Computers
It is generally accepted that computers benefit human beings in many ways. But t
hey have
also caused many problems. Apparently computers have both advantages and disadva
ntages.
Computers are being used more and more widely in the world today, for the simple
st reason that they are far more efficient than human beings. Computers have muc
h better memories and can store huge amounts of information, and they can do cal
culations in a fraction of the time taken by a human mathematician. In fact, com
puters can do many of the things we do, but faster and better. They can pay wage
s, reserve seats on a plane, control machines in factories, work out tomorrow’s
weather, and even play chess, write poetry, or compose music. Nowadays, it is ve
ry convenient and economical to do anything on the Internet, such as sending or
receiving email, shopping, advertising, making friends, and entertaining. The
g
lobe will be like an office or home. This is the unprecedented charm of the comp
uter. In short, computers have been making the whole world much more advanced an
d civilized than ever before.
However, computers have been creating many problems. First, viruses arise freque
ntly, bringing great troubles to many people. Every year, various viruses cause
loss of thousands of millions of dollars and ruin numberless projects. On the 26
th of a month 1999, many personal computers were destroyed by the CIH virus. Sec
ondly, some computer “experts” make huge amount of money by cheating a compute
r
system, and they are very difficult to catch. What is worse, some people transmi
t pornographic information or pictures on the Internet, which is harmful to youn
g people.
Despite their disadvantages, computers have brought us far more benefits than tr
oubles.
【模拟训练参考作文13】On the Importance of Selfconfidence
Selfconfidence means trust in one’s own ability. It is believed to be the
To err is human; to forgive, divine.
犯错人皆难免;宽恕则属超凡。
first secret of success. Before you start to do anything, you must believe that
you can do it well with your earnest effort. Selfconfidence gives you light w
h
en you are in dark and encouragement when you are dismayed. If one lacks confide
nce in himself, there is little possibility that he may achieve anything especia
lly when one is in face of difficulties.
Why do people feel frustrated when they are capable of doing something? Th
e reasons for that are, first of all they overestimate difficulties, thinking th
at their difficulties are too great to overcome. Second, they underestimate thei
r abilities. This is an incorrect attitude toward oneself. Finally, they are afr
aid of making mistakes or getting failures.
It is possible to build up faith in oneself by having the right attitude t
oward one’s own ability. It is selfconfidence, rather than genius and extraord
i
nary ability, that inspires you to cope with any arduous task. We should never d
espise ourselves. As the proverb goes, “Where there is a will, there is a way,
”
we can reach our goal with our constant and patient efforts, for “Confidence is
a plant of slow growth.” Remember that “Confidence in yourself is the first st
ep on the road to success.”
