英语专业的学生经过两年的学习，已有相当的英语语言知识，已在语音、语速、语流等方面接受过训练，了解了重读、弱读、连读、省音、不完全爆破、同化等知识。但在口语中，对语调意义可超出语音和 词汇 意义认识不足。语调可用来表示谈话者对事件的态度、感情、口吻和意图。学生要培养从所听到的片言只语中，抓住说话者的态度。

　　例如：同一个单词well，使用不同的语调，可以表示不同的感情。
